Orvieto

Orvieto is one of the most beautiful cities of Umbria. Its position is perfect to reach easily the rest of Umbria, Tuscany and the north of Lazio.

Orvieto was once a very important Etruscan centre, then a papal fortress and today a beautiful city, situated on a big rock of volcanic tuff. The city is a very nice place where you walk trough with pleasure. The historical centre is rich of monuments like the amazing Cathedral, a real jewel of the roman-gothic architecture of Italy. And like St Patrick’s well, built in 1527 to furnish water to the city in case of siege.
Under the city there is another Orvieto: an “underground city” (Orvieto Underground) excavated out of the tuff rock that is composed with tunnels, caves and wells of Etruscan age.

Other than being famous for its monuments, Orvieto is well known for the production of its excellent wine “Orvieto Classico” and has an important tradition of wood, ceramic and wrought iron crafts.
It is also very renamed for its cultural, musical and gastronomic events. What is also interesting are the bordering places to visit, easily reachable by car or, for the active people and lovers of nature, by bike. Like the countryside of Porano, the lake of Corbara, the Lake of Bolsena, Civita di Bagnoregio, all very rich of history and with astonishing landscapes to make your trip in this ancient lands unforgettable.
